These six images convey the themes of utopia and dystopia. They are meant to show how a real moment in time was so heavily shaped by utopian ideals. I alter these pristine, curated scenes of suburban 1950s life to convey the utopian ideals to an extent, while also incorporating elements that remind the viewer of how these scenes can also represent a dystopia. All images come from an online collection of photography by Maynard L. Parker. The images are all photos taken in the 1950s and are currently exhibited on the University of California Calisphere database as part of the “California and the Postwar Suburban Home” collection. A few images come from Wendy Kaplan’s book, “California Design, 1930-1965.”
